This poem is the only piece I wrote while I was with Miya in South Dakota at the end of her life.
Running with Coyotes Memories and stories are important to us, comforting and healing, too. Like songs that mean so much to us, they linger and shape everything we do. “Thank you” lives between the lines for love, vast and true. Deep is the consciousness of dusk to dawn. In dreams, we seek a clearer view. Blessings are served without a sound in a hand held out to me. Courage, like wild horses in the night, stays the course with Mystery. She is running pretty quickly now and knows no spaciousness of time. The sun and moon will rise and set with a glimmer of stars sublime. It’s like a breath, to hear her voice, in the stillness of the evening. Whispered syllables express the promise Wakan Tanka is keeping. When Spirit looks upon us two keenly like the crow, our story of love and tenderness will impress like Pine Ridge in snow. She is walking with coyotes. They howl and yip and play. I hear her in their laughter as they creep across the Plains. She is soaring with the winged ones. I meet her in everything that flies. I feel her in the sunlight and know her in each sky surprise. She is running pretty quickly now and knows no spaciousness of time. The sun and moon will rise and set with a glimmer of stars sublime. way ya hey ya hey ya hi yo way ya hey ya hey ya hi yo
