Saturday I drove westward to Cannon Beach. Sunday I drove eastward to Hood River. Each trip included snow and clouds on the way there, water and sunshine on my arrival.

I wish grief were as simple as a beginning and an ending, the freeze and the thaw, darkness then light. But I think it’s really more about setting out, journeying, having many departures and arrivals, moving in and out of darkness, and making many return trips.
